One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Week Two

What makes McMurphy different from the other patients? Why hasn't he been affected by the "Combine"? Which characters seem to belong on the ward? Are there any who do not?

McMurphy is very different from the rest of the ward, hes just there so he doesn't have to be at the farm working. He's trying to make himself seem like he belongs but the Big Nurse doesn't want him there anymore. She wants to send him to the "disturbed" unit because he had an outbreak that she thought was more assualting than anything else. McMurphy hasn't seen the "combine" becuase he keep's laughing. The smallest thing that's not even funny he will laugh at. McMurphy is about the only person who doesn't belong on the ward, and Nurse Ratched does. She seemed to have flipped out when McMuphy wanted to watch the baseball series and the most of the ward as well. Chief Bromden as well doesn't belong on the ward because the only reason he's having hallucination's from the medicine he's taking. Harding is there because he's trying to hide from the rest of the world becuase he's gay, and married to a beautiful women. Chesiwick doesn't show any signs of needing to be there, hes also hiding from the outside world but for the problems. As well as Billy Bibbit doesn't belong there, the only reason he is there is because he stutters, and there are many people who stutter that doesn't mean they belong in a pyshc ward. The vegtables and the chronics because they actually show reasons to be there and need the attending to. There's no helping the chronic's but most weren't that bad off from being cured, until they came into the ward.

I think Mcmurphy avoids being sucked in to the powers of the combine and nurse ractched because he keeps laughing and doesnt let it get under his skin to much, i dont believe that him or chief belong their nor do i think harding, cheswick and billy bibbit to i think it is more of them hiding from the outside world than it being neccesary, Harding is gay and billy just stutters i have yet to realize what is really wrong with cheswick. Most of the other chronics do belong their and judging by the aides mental states of raping the patients and nurse ratched's sick antics that they do belong their.

Great points, ladies -
It is interesting to see how laughter plays into the novel, and to our perceptions of sanity...
I think it is really easy to sympathize with and relate to the patients in the novel. We all have problems and tend to find the best ways to deal with them. The characters (besides McMurphy) have trouble coping with the outside world. Besides laughter, what are some skills people use to cope?

Theres many ways to cope with anything, some cry laugh morn sometimes its not even doing that. Just keep busy could help sometimes so that someone doesn't have to think about something. Or they try to run from their problems, that's what the ward seems to be doing in the novel.

Everybody figures out their own way to cope crying, laughing and avoidance are common things to do. When there is something difficult coming your way like in the case of most of the acutes they are avoiding their problems rather than coping with them

They want to take the easy way out of life, like with Billy his mother treats him like a young boy and he just can't get out of that. I understand why he's like that his mother is partly to blame.
